DIY: creating a gallery wall in our living room

Gallery walls are really beautiful when they're executed well, but more often than not, they look like a hodgepodge of frames that don't quite work together. In the past, I've tried to pull from whatever frames I happen to have on hand, and it always misses the mark. This time around, I decided to be a little more thoughtful and plan out my entire gallery wall beforehand, so I could avoid nailing 1000 holes in my wall along the way. I'm pretty happy with the outcome for once, so here are my steps for creating a gallery wall in the least frustrating way possible:

Step 1: choose a color scheme that works for your art / your home:
Lucas inherited some really great black and white prints from his Cuban grandparents, so I decided to create a neutral gallery wall so we could put those on display. We also use a lot of neutrals in our living room, so the black and white color scheme tied in pretty well.

Step 2: create unity and consistency
The prints were framed and matted in a variety of ways when we received them, so I decided to start the framing from scratch in order to create a bit of unity and tie everything together. The prints we received are pretty traditional, so I scoured the internet for some more modern prints to mix it up a bit. I chose 2 framed prints from Minted and 4 framed prints from Artfully Walls. I also decided to reframe the Cuban prints through Framebridge, so I shipped them off to get a facelift.
I created this layout through PowerPoint to test and hone the design.
Step 3: map it out
The nice thing about Framebridge, Artfully Walls, and Minted is that these sites give previews of the final product. Before pressing the "submit order" button, I took screen shots of all of the frames and then layered them on top of a photo of our blank wall. You can do this through Photoshop, but you can also just do it through PowerPoint to make things super easy. I chose more frames than I ultimately needed and then used the layout to organize and refine the design until I was happy with it.
I laid out all of my frames and tweaked it on the floor before mapping it out on the wall.
Step 4: lay all frames out on the floor
Once all of my frames were delivered, I tested the design out on the floor. Some of the frames were slightly smaller / larger than I'd anticipated, so I tweaked the design a bit. You'll see that the final product isn't quite the same as the layout I created, but it was close.
I used painters tape to make an outline of the frames and then checked it out from different angles before I started nailing.
Step 5: use painters tape to avoid insanity
I measured the dimensions of the frames on the floor and then found the center of my wall. From there, I put painters around the edges of each frame and then carefully picked it up and transferred it to the wall. I tweaked the placement on the wall until I was happy with it, and then I started to nail.

Step 6: hang your frames
The nice thing about using painters tape is that it's pretty easy to get the design right on your first attempt. I am proud to say I didn't have to re-nail a single time and it looked pretty good the first time.

Voila! That's it.

Peony Season

I live for peony season every year. You know, the 3 weeks where you can buy peonies at Trader Joe's for $5 a bunch? Paris has done wonders for my obsession with flowers - the fleurs are so gorgeous here in the spring.
I resisted buying them for as long as possible, but then we stumbled across these gorgeous peonies in every shade of pink at a farmer's market in Marais on Saturday. I had to have some!
I chose the deep magenta color, but they also had soft pink, white, and red versions. They were ~8 Euros for the bunch. Can't beat that, especially when they're normally ~$10 per stem!
We didn't have any vases around our apartment (I searched high and low) so I had to settle for this glass. It's working out okay although the blooms are rapidly opening and may outgrow the tiny glass soon. They're already making our little apartment feel more cozy. XOXO

Moving...

We're in the middle of moving, which is why our house went from looking like this...
...to looking like this! Wish us luck over the next few weeks. Isn't moving the worst? :(

Peony Season

It's pretty much my favorite time of year: peony season. :) For a few, sweet weeks out of the year, Trader Joes carries inexpensive stems of peonies. Each bouquet is $6.99 and comes with 5 stems - I picked up these pale pink and hot pink bunches last weekend.
I created a large arrangement for the kitchen table and then scattered around a few small arrangements around the house.
I'm hoping to pick up a few more bunches before the end of the season. Happy Summer, y'all!

Thrift Store Finds

Our local Goodwill is just about the best thrift store that ever was. Here are a few goodies we picked up last weekend. Above is our new little brass clock that I thought would be the perfect knick-knack to sit on top of our new cabinet. Lucas doesn't really get the concept of knick-knacks, like candles, picture frames, and clocks that are not quite in working condition (we're working on it...), but he's slowly coming around. :) Below are our new little brass candle holders, which I love. Don't they look like the best of friends sitting all cute in our entry way?
We're collecting gold and silver picture frames to display old family photos at our wedding. I picked up the frame on the right and Lucas's parents look right at home in it. PS - isn't his mom gorgeous?
Our mail tends to pile up on the counter, despite how many times I swear to myself that I won't let that happen. I was thrilled to find this mail tray for a whopping $2! It doesn't count as clutter if it's in a tray, right?
Finally, someone decided to donate this brand new Target mirror to Goodwill. Welp...thanks whoever you are! I haven't found a new home for it yet, but I've definitely been brainstorming. It actually turns out that Kristina bought the same one at Target and it looks amazing hanging above her bed.
Until next time, Goodwill! XOX

Michelle Armas Print

I've been looking for a large, abstract painting or print to hang in our living room for months (see...this is proof of that!), but it's been hard for me to find something that I like in my price range. I've had my eye on Michelle Armas and her amazing paintings and prints, but I just couldn't quite pull the trigger and order one. Today her large prints were on mega sale on One Kings Lane and I took it as the universe's way of telling me I should order it. I even pinned this exact print a few months ago! So you're looking at the proud owner of a new abstract print, y'all. :)

Max Wanger Print Shop

The talented photographer, Max Wanger, just launched a lovely print shop. Wouldn't these look great hanging above a bed? His photography has such a relaxing feel to it.

Zara Home

When I was traveling in Europe, I loved walking through the Zara Home stores and secretly wished I could ship some of the furniture home. Luckily, Zara launched the US branch of Zara Home today - yippee! Check it out here.

Prettypegs

It's not difficult to recognize Ikea furniture. It's modern, simple, and featured in the home of pretty much every 20-something I know! Have you ever heard of Prettypegs? It is a Swedish company that sells stylish replacement legs for Ikea furniture. Genius!

Artwork for the Home

We've been in our townhouse for a year and a half now (where does the time go?). While we've been able to fully furnish our place, we're still working on filling our wall space. It's a bit hard to find pieces that we both love and can afford. Here are a few of my favorites right now.

The painting above is a Lulie Wallace painting. I recently ordered one of a custom floral arrangement that Lucas gave me, and I'm so excited that it should be done later this month.

Emily Green's watercolor paintings are lovely and we could choose colors that appeal to both of us:
This Nancy Ramirez print is really cool and would look awesome in a gold frame:

Caroline Wright has really amazing paintings, and I love her drip and line series:
I'd love to hear about any favorite artists that you may have. We're searching for a few things to adorn our walls and would appreciate any guidance!

Nina Garcia's NYC Apartment

Nina Garcia is the stylish judge of Project Runway and the Fashion Director of Marie Claire. Her home is featured in this month's issue of Architectural Digest and it is to die for. I'm having major apartment envy as I flip through the photos.

Second-hand Finds

We spend a lot of time going to yard sales, thrift stores, and flea markets to search for furniture and goodies. As a result, we've furnished our townhouse almost entirely with second-hand furniture. Here are a few things we recently picked up.

Above is a green depression glass vase that we bought at a yard sale for $1 (the flowers are from the local farmers' market!). Below is our vintage bar cart that we picked up at the Alameda Flea Market for $20:
We found this brass piano lamp on Craiglist for $15. Today we saw a really similar one at Homegoods for $150!
This brand new World Market basket was at Goodwill for $1. The tags were still attached. Score!
Finally, this green storage cube from Goodwill recently joined the Turner-Puente household. It's the perfect place to stash blankets and computer cords to reduce clutter.
